Week 5 : Summary and Findings of the Case Study

Wasn't the statistics about social media interesting? Well, definitely I was! I wonder how they found that all out.

As I premise that all of you have gone through the case study for this week's assignment, I would briefly summarize the case and share what I found out from that. First study was about 'Facebook Marketing'. It shared strategies on how to market on Facebook using pages, ads and groups. The second case study was about the 'timing' of social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and Blog. Finally, the last article was about applying previous two cases into a real case of 'Zappos'.

First of all, using ads on Facebook for marketing was very interesting. I have seen ads very frequently but I did not know there were so many types of ads to use. For example, there are ads that direct to Facebook pages or to a site, ads that promote a Facebook event, and ads for mobile app installs and app engagement. Also, Facebook offers a function to hide ads if users do not want to see them. When users click on hide button, they automatically ask why they do not like it and this information can be a valuable information for ad agencies.

Second, the term CTR was not familiar with me at first. By looking at the organized infographic and surfing through the Internet, I found that CTR was an abbreviation for Click Through Rate which is a very common word used in the advertising field. In my previous experience in MIS (Management Information System) course in Korea, I learned about CPM which is Cost Per Mille, and I think both terms can be an effective measure when we want to talk about the usage of online platforms.

Lastly, the findings related to blogs were very different from what I expected, which was also intriguing. I thought the day that gets the most traffic and the day when most comments are written would be the same day, but actually it was not. Also, the time when the most comments are added to the blogs were around 9am in the morning. Maybe it's time when people wake up and start their SNS.

The lessons I learned from this case study is very important because it helps me to formulate effective strategies in social media. As now I know which day and time has high probability of people participating at certain social media platform, I can use that information to promote my brand more wisely and effectively. By appyling this statistics, I would also be able to save my time and money in advertising!

  2. I also discovered that the time when most comments are added were 9 am. It was a huge mistake for me because i've always thought it was around 6pm.

  4. Hello Yoo Jeong!! It is really great to read your thoughts. I agree with your points and I also learned several important facts that can help to formulate effective strategies in social media. Perhaps, I need to be aware of time and upload something early in the morning, when most people are online. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

  5. Hello!
Concerning the findings related to blogs, I agree with you on the fact that the day that gets the most traffic is not the same as the one most comments are written. Maybe because people take more time to write comments on Saturday when they don't work.

  6. The time for posting was pretty surprising sometimes, and isn't that weird to see that most of platforms have different effective times to post?

  7. Hi Yoo Jeong!

It seems curious that social networks offer a function to hide ads, give said advertisements are one of their main sources of revenue! Although I agree that learning why your target audience doesn't like them is of great value!

Why do you think companies risk having their (paid) promotions removed on these platforms?

  8. Hi Mia!
Thank you for sharing your point of view. You states that “Facebook offers a function to hide ads if users do not want to see them”. I never thought about that until you mentioned it just now.

  9. Hi! I like what you said about Facebook ads. I also never really thought about how personalized Facebook was to people before this. If you click to hide an ad on Facebook, it probably never shows up again. Also, I found your comparison of CTR, Click Through Rate, and CPM, Cost Per Mile, very interesting. I didn't think of it that way but it makes sense.

  10. Indeed, I agree with you, it's confusing and we have to pay attention to the time zone. It's hard to coordonate your planning with other countries because of that !
